As I approached Osaka Castle, the impressive main tower immediately caught my eye. It stands as a testament to Japan's rich past. Constructed in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle played a significant role in unifying Japan.

I found its architecture breathtaking. The castle's gold accents glisten in the sunlight, and its green roof adds a unique charm. Inside, the tower hosts a museum showcasing important artefacts from Japanese history, which offered me a deeper cultural appreciation. The observation area of Osaka Castle is located on the 8th floor of the castle's main tower. This floor offers 360-degree panoramic views of Osaka, making it one of the best spots in the city to take in the beautiful skyline, especially on clear days.

Exploring the vast castle grounds was a delightful experience. The surrounding Osaka Castle Park provided a peaceful green respite amid Osaka's busy city life. I recommend setting aside ample time for a leisurely stroll and taking in the beautiful scenery.

To begin my visit, I purchased tickets conveniently at the entrance (the Osaka Castle is included with the Osaka Amazing Pass). Ticket prices were reasonable and easily available for all age groups. I suggest arriving early to avoid crowds. By doing so, you can fully enjoy both the historical marvels and the natural beauty surrounding the castle. Near the Osaka Castle, you will find a small shopping centre called Miraiza Osaka-Jo where I purchased some personalized chopsticks, an “Osaka” magnet and had a drink at one of the rooftop bars with amazing views overlooking Osaka Castle.

Dotonbori is a haven for food lovers. The smell of takoyaki, or octopus balls, fills the air. These snacks are crispy on the outside and gooey inside, making them a must-try. I found myself returning to Ichiran Namba Midosuji, famous for its no-pork ramen. Nearby, Gyozaoh! Dotonbori offers mouth-watering gyoza, perfect for a quick bite. For dessert, a stop at Cheese Tart Pablo Shinsaibashi satisfies any sweet cravings with its creamy and rich tarts.

Ichiran is tucked away along bustling streets, while Gyozaoh! stands out with its traditional signage. Pablo's is easy to spot, drawing in crowds with its delightful aroma. Shopping in Osaka is a dream for travellers, offering a mix of high-end brands, trendy fashion, electronics, and unique Japanese souvenirs. Popular shopping areas include Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street, a vibrant hub for fashion lovers; Namba for quirky, affordable finds; and Umeda for luxury department stores like Hankyu and Daimaru. For electronics, Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera are must-visit stores.

One major perk for international travelers is tax-free shopping. Many stores in Japan offer tax-free purchases for tourists, allowing you to save the 10% consumption tax on eligible items. To qualify, you must spend over 5,000 yen in a single store and show your passport at checkout. Make sure to keep your tax-free receipts in your passport, as you may need to show them at the airport before leaving Japan. Additionally, it's helpful to pay with a credit card to avoid the need to carry large amounts of cash, though many smaller shops may still prefer cash payments.

Here, the stunning recreation of Hogwarts and the magical Hogsmeade village transport you straight into the movies. Enjoy adrenaline-pumping rides like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Here, I enjoyed my first warm “Butterbeer” which was delicious!

Another standout area is the vibrant Super Nintendo World, where video game lovers can immerse themselves in the vibrant, interactive experiences. With rides based on beloved Nintendo games, it’s a must-visit for fans of Super Mario. I loved Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, I rode this ride twice! I also had my lunch here at Kinopio's Cafe where I enjoyed the Chicken Teriyaki (the presentation was super cute, the rice was in the shape of a star). The rides and attractions are both thrilling and nostalgic, making it a highlight of any visit. At the time of my visit to Universal Studios Japan, once you entered the park you could scan a QR Code for an entry time into Super Nintendo World. Also note, that this is good for one entry per person, you can not re-enter the park later in the day with another entry time as it’s currently one entry time per person per day. Make sure to enjoy everything Super Nintendo World has to offer before leaving this area of the park.

The reason I booked my tickets through Klook is that I have a Canadian credit card. Unfortunately most tickets for attractions in Japan don’t accept international credit cards, so with Universal Studios Japan, Tokyo Disneyland and TeamLabs Planets, I did purchase my tickets through Klook.

The key is to prioritize rides that are most popular or that you know you’ll enjoy the most. Getting an express pass for rides in both The Wizarding World and Super Nintendo World can make your day unforgettable. As I was travelling solo, some of the rides here at Universal Studios Japan did offer “Single Rider Lines” and I did use these when offered (which cut the wait times down extensively for me).

Tickets for USJ can sell out, especially during peak seasons. Purchase your tickets online through the official website or a trusted platform like Klook to avoid long lines and guarantee your spot. It’s also wise to consider Express Passes for priority access to popular rides like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge.

2. Arrive Early

USJ is one of the most popular theme parks in Asia, and it gets busy quickly! Arrive 30 minutes to an hour before opening to get a head start on popular attractions. This is especially helpful if you don’t have an Express Pass. Getting to Universal Studios is also very easy. Getting to Universal Studios Japan from Osaka Station is easy and convenient. Start by taking the JR Yumesaki Line from Osaka Station directly to Universal City Station. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Once you arrive at Universal City Station, it’s just a short walk to the park entrance, where you’ll find clear signage to guide you. For added convenience, you can also take the Hanshin Limited Express to Namba Station, then transfer to the JR Line, but the Yumesaki Line is the most straightforward option for direct access to the park. I used Google Maps from my accomodation, which gave me really detailed instruction on how to get to USJ and recommend using Google Maps for directions! 3. Plan for Popular Attractions First

Plan to visit the most popular areas, like Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, first thing in the morning. These areas can fill up fast, and sometimes even require timed-entry tickets. Timed-entry tickets are free but limited, so grab one as soon as you arrive if needed.

4. Download the USJ App

The Universal Studios Japan app offers real-time information on ride wait times, show schedules, and park maps. This is a must-have tool to help you plan your day efficiently and stay updated on any changes or special events. I used this several times during my visit, as I had visited on a rainy day, it was very informative to stay up to date on what had been cancelled or which rides had longer lines or shorter wait times.

5. Understand the Express Pass Options

USJ offers various Express Passes that provide skip-the-line access to specific rides. Different passes cover different attractions, so check which rides each pass includes and choose the one that best fits your interests. Though they are an additional cost, they can significantly reduce wait times and allow you to experience more of the park.

There are water fountains around the park where you can refill your bottle. Also, remember to stay hydrated, especially if you’re visiting in the summer months.

7. Rent a Coin Locker

It was still busy, so I couldn’t imagine what a weekend in the middle of summer would have been like.

The most notable change to the JR Pass is the significant price increase. The cost has risen by about 70%, making it less of a budget-friendly option for travellers. For instance, a 7-day ordinary JR Pass now costs around 50,000 yen, up from 29,650 yen, which can quickly add up for longer trips or larger groups. For travelers staying in one or two cities or planning to explore just one region, the JR Pass may not be cost-effective. With the higher prices, local or regional passes (such as the Kansai Area Pass) can often offer better value for shorter trips or single-region travel. I personally did not buy a pass and used the Shinkansen in the Green Car from Kyoto to Osaka. I used the regional JR Line train when I travelled from Osaka to Kyoto and Kyoto to Nara and used the Suica Card in my Apple Wallet (more on this in a future blog post).

What is the best time to visit Osaka?

The best time to visit Osaka depends on the kind of experience you’re looking for, but spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are generally the most popular seasons. During these months, Osaka experiences mild temperatures, blooming cherry blossoms in spring, and vibrant autumn foliage, making it an ideal time for sightseeing. Winter (December to February) is also a great time to visit if you prefer fewer crowds. Early February, for instance, can offer pleasant temperatures ranging from around 15-19°C (59-66°F) with only occasional rain, as I experienced. Summers, from June to August, tend to be hot and humid with the added possibility of rain, so they may be less comfortable for outdoor activities.

What are the must-try local foods in the Dotonbori area?

Yes! I use Google Maps for all my directions in Japan. I simply used my location (I had data using an Airalo eSIM) and would get live directions to where I was going. Not only did it give me step by step instructions, but it would also tell me which exit of the metro or station I should use and the estimated cost of the transportation (which was perfect for making sure I had enough credit on my Suica Card for that trip). I would also suggest downloading an using Google Translate as you can use the photo feature to read anything in Japanese (make sure you download this on wifi as it can be used offline as well).

I personally used Airalo (an eSIM) for my data usage while travelling in Japan (and everywhere else around the world). It was easy to download and use the moment I landed in Osaka.
